GlobalDots accelerates traffic from an end user to an origin server by using DNS to redirect traffic across a Virtual Network. GlobalDots' Virtual Network intelligently analyzes the Internet Backbone to find the fastest routes between any two endpoints, avoiding congestion and overcoming the performance problems caused by least cost routing. In the process, it delivers 20x better data transfer performance. Our solution is deployed across public clouds and delivered “as-a-Service,” so there is no hardware or caching to configure.
Our platform carries content along a virtual network of TCRs, so it looks to the rest of the network like any other network proxy - such as a load balancer, SSL offload or CDN cache. The end user connects to a TCR, which then routes that traffic along the virtual network to the origin server. Because TCRs act as network proxies, the connection request that reaches the origin server will have the IP address of a local TCR, referred to as a “TCR Out”.
The GlobalDots Virtual Network uses Proxy Protocol to give the load balancer at the origin connection information from the end user requesting a connection to the origin server. The load balancer then adds connection information to the X-Forwarded-For headers of each HTTP request such as the source IP address, destination IP address, and port numbers.
Traditional CDNs all work the same way - they deploy lots of HTTP servers throughout the world and cache (or store) content (images, text, videos, etc.) on these servers. The idea is to move the content physically closer to end users (no matter where they are in the world) so that the content can be more quickly downloaded to such end users. However, no single CDN can guarantee 100% uptime.

No single CDN can realistically provide 100% availability. However, by intelligently balancing content delivery among multiple CDNs, availability can approach 100%.
The problem of content delivery is not a new one. There just isn’t enough bandwidth today to handle all the traffic, especially during big releases and popular live streaming events. The only way to scale with the demand is to decentralize the model and remove the bottlenecks.
BUT SERVER CAPACITY ONLY GROWS LINEARLY
WebRTC unlocked that distributed promise with ubiquitous, secured P2P technology. Now we can finally use this because the web has embraced open standards with security and performance as WebRTC became part of HTML5.
P2P streaming works by creating a mesh network consisting of users who are watching the same content and coordinating these users so that they send video segments to each other instead of everyone always fetching the segments from an edge server.
Specifically, GlobalDots espouses a hybrid solution where a broadcaster uses our solution in combination with one or more HTTP-based CDNs -- i.e., don't rip out your existing CDN infrastructure, just add them as another option in your multi-CDN portfolio. The integration point is via one line of JavaScript which implements a hybrid switcher -- once GlobalDots is integrated, users can fetch segments from either an edge server or from their peer group, whichever channel performs better at that given moment in time.
As more chunk requests are handled by the peer group, the broadcaster sees dramatic reductions in server load and, consequently, higher stream quality (faster load times, less buffering, longer viewing sessions).
GlobalDots' Elastic Cloud Optimization platform elegantly addresses cloud cost and management challenges with the reliable and efficient use of AWS’ Spot Market to reduce EC2 costs by 60% - 80% compared to On Demand Instance pricing -- while still delivering 100% availability for high demand and persistent applications.
Amazon created the Spot Market to optimize their data center utilization by leveraging their spare capacity. However, if a customer pays for higher priced On-Demand or Reserved Instances, Amazon gives the user 2 minutes notice and takes Instance out of the Spot Market and provides it to the higher paying customer.
Our platform uses predictive algorithm technology to identify and terminate Spot Instances that are about to be “interrupted” by AWS. Then, it automatically and transparently transitions applications to an “available” Spot Instance with absolutely no downtime regardless of application type or demand requirements.
EC2 Spot Instances can be used without GlobalDots platform, but there’s a catch - the Spot Instances won’t necessarily be available when you need or want to use them. Managing and strategizing around interruptible Spot Instances without GlobalDots can be challenging, not to mention unsuitable for AWS customers running high demand, persistent applications that must deliver stable online end user experiences.
