New Record Breaking 1.7 Tbps DDoS Attack, Non-HTTPS Sites To Be Marked Not Secure And More In This Weeks News

The record has been broken – again

Only four days after the 1.35 Tbps Github DDoS attack that was successfully mitigated by Akamai a new record breaking attack has been recorded. This time the size of the attack is a staggering 1.7 Tbps and it was recorded by ATLAS global traffic and DDoS threat data system against one of its unnamed US-based customer’s website. The type of attack in question is a reflection/amplification memcached DDoS attack, the same type that was used on Github.

On July 2018, Google Chrome is marking all non-HTTPS sites as “not secure”

As stated by Akamai in their article, the days of clear-text HTTP, the original but insecure foundation for data communication over the web, are numbered. HTTP sites are already ranking lower in Google search results, and this new change means the HTTP sites will 100% be a thing of the past. The result will be a significant increase in the adoption of HTTPS which will in turn result in a more secure World Wide Web.

Look-alike domains and the related dangers

KrebsOnSecurity recently analysed a new threat regarding impostor domains. In short, for example this domain: https://www.са.com/ when entered in your browser will not actually lead you to the original CA Technologies website. The reason behind this is that it has been written in punycode, or in translation – in Cyrillic lettering to impose as something it is in fact – not. It was registered by Alex Holden of Hold Security Inc. as a warning to everyone out there to be able to check if someone is using this against their websites.

Facebook and Nokia partner up

An interesting partnership has been announced recently between Facebook and Nokia in order to accelerate the adoption of 60 GHz fixed wireless access technologies to deliver gigabit services and connect more people with also in mind to make it faster. This new 60 GHz technology compliments the existing fiber technology by allowing high-speed broadband connectivity in urban or suburban areas. Nokia will combine its worldwide delivery capabilities and wireless passive optical network (WPON) with Facebook’s Terragraph technology to launch global gigabit broadband trials in 2018 with select customers.

A new CDN startup in Brazil

GoCache, an upcoming CDN based Brazil startup which is focused primarily on small and medium sized businesses has been picking up some attention recently with a current list of 200+ customers and 5,000+ websites on their platform. GoCache is specifically targeting businesses in Brazil who haven’t yet adopted a CDN and apparently they’re currently getting a lot of customers from AWS being that AWS is providing educations about the benefits of website performance while GoCache can cater better to the clients needs since they’re local.
