Verizon is All Set to Commence 5G Trials, CloudFlare Launches the HTTP/2 Server Push Offering And More in This Weeks News

Verizon is all set to Commence 5G Trials

Verizon, the provider of communications and telecom services is the closest provider to reach the commercial 5G milestone, going as far as to say that Verizon will launch in a few key markets by the end of the year. In particular, Verizon partnered with Nokia in field testing 5G networks in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, analyzing the latency and speed of the network on 73 GHz and 28 GHz bands with an aim to provide speed of multiple gigabits per second with a spectral bandwidth of 1 GHz and approximately 1 ms of latency. Nokia noted that this represented an “extreme broadband” use case to examine the plausibility of replacing high-speed indoor wireline connections with wireless coverage in residential areas. The two companies stressed that they would roll out a pilot of fixed wireless 5G by 2017 at the latest.  Small cell densification is also part and parcel of Verizon’s 5G coverage strategy, in order to enable high-speed video delivery over a wireless network in an efficient way.

CloudFlare launches the HTTP/2 Server Push offering

CloudFlare, the provider of CDN and DNS services, has launched HTTP/2 support last November and now serves more than 70% of the more than 88k Alexa 2 million websites that are HTTP/2-enabled. CloudFlare has been testing Header Compression since February, but only now is the main acceleration component of HTTP/2, Server Push. HTTP/2 Server Push is not advantageous in all situations, however, and can use excess bandwidth by pushing unneeded assets. Server Push can be deactivated using the “no push” directive header. Mobile networks (and other slow, lossy networks) are the most susceptible to both the benefits and downfalls of HTTP/2, as bandwidth and connection stability is constantly in flux. By using the Canary version of Google Chrome, websites can test the performance of their site using HTTP/2 with and without Server Push. Safari, however, does not support Server Push and assets can only be pushed from the a single domain, not from a third party.

Imperva chosen as Indiegala’s web security provider

Imperva, the provider of cyber and data security services, has been hired by  Indiegala, a digital distributor of PC games, for web security services. As Indiegala expanded its online business, it recognized that simply relying on the Google Cloud infrastructure, while powerful, was not giving it the level of visibility into its website traffic that the expanding gaming retailer needed. The company uses the Imperva Incapsula Web Application Firewall (WAF) service to protect data and transactions on www.indiegala.com for up to one million unique visitors per month. The service also acts as a content delivery network (CDN) to help keep the flow of website traffic fast for close to three million user sessions per month on average. During the most recent attack, the Imperva service blocked a network-level DDoS attack that reached 17.8 Gbps on the Indiegala website, without disruption to its customers.

Keepixo and Broadpeak enable scalable delivery of 4K live HTTP television

Keepixo, the provider of software-based headend solutions for IPTV and OTT, and Broadpeak, the provider of content delivery network (CDN) technologies and services for telecom, cable, mobile, and satellite Pay-TV operators worldwide, announced the integration of Keepixo’s 4K encoder with Broadpeak’s nanoCDN multicast ABR technology. As household penetration of Ultra HD 4K TVs grows, OTT service providers will increasingly include 4K content in their streaming offerings creating the need for high quality UHD encoders with support for Adaptive Bitrate (ABR) protocol. Keepixo’s AL2000-UHD platform addresses service providers’ needs for high quality, multi-profile encoders. Using nanoCDN technology, service providers are able to cost-effectively manage the consumption peaks of live multiscreen services for millions of simultaneous viewers using only a few megabits per second from their network. Through the power of multicast, nanoCDN makes live HTTP video delivery to any device truly scalable, turning millions of broadband gateways or STBs into active components of an operator’s content delivery infrastructure. Keepixo’s  collaboration with Broadpeak simplifies the deployment of 4K OTT services by providing small form factor encoders along with nanoCDN, Broadpeak’s bandwidth efficient streaming technology.

Instart Logic is now a certified IBM Ready for Commerce partner

Instart Logic, the provider of application delivery solutions,  announced that it has became a certified IBM Ready for Commerce partner in order to help retail clients accelerate the performance of their e-commerce platforms. Instart Logic completed the rigorous verification process to ensure compatibility with IBM WebSphere Commerce and IBM Commerce on Cloud. Instart Logic’s Application Delivery Platform brings a fundamental new approach to website delivery and security to users of IBM WebSphere Commerce and IBM Commerce on Cloud. It uses software and machine learning to solve the modern application delivery problems in the mobile era. The Performance Suite cuts time to interact with the back-end platform and increases page views, while the Security Suite keeps users safe, ultimately resulting in higher engagement and conversion rates. Now more than ever, retailers seek to provide rich e-commerce experiences for consumers. To create these interactive experiences, websites are loaded with additional functionalities, resulting in platforms being weighed down, which affects load times. This lag in performance results in high abandonment rates and lost revenue for online retailers.
