Media streaming simply means that all types of multimedia files are streamed using a method similar to video streaming. A compressed file is sent in real-time through a streaming server that uses real-time protocols, to a player that decodes and displays the data as it arrives. The same data is also being discarded from your computer once it has been streamed. To read more on how it works visit the video streaming page.

Multimedia files that can be streamed:

  • video files (movies, recordings, lectures…)
  • audio files (radio stream, music tracks, narrations…)
  • real-time text (closed captioning, stock ticker…)
  • real-time animations
  • real-time images
  • presentations
  • the mix of all above

Many services will let you stream multimedia content instead of download, and this practice is becoming more widespread, more affordable and sometimes even free. Multimedia files can also be streamed from one computer to another, or from a computer to a smartphone, in case you don’t want to copy the whole file to another device, e.g. due to a lack of space.

Advantages of providing streaming media technology

A number of competing streaming technologies are emerging, and the importance of such technology is rapidly increasing with multimedia files being requested all over the internet as soon as possible. Some of the advantages of providing such streaming media technologies are:

  • Full insight into users’ statistics
  • Control over users’ viewing experience
  • Featuring playlists
  • Control over media piracy
  • Download is not possible without your permission
  • Faster views
  • A chance to monetize your multimedia content

Streaming Media put into practice

  • Digital music – media streaming is used for the promotion of artists and albums, it is a secure way for artists to reach wider audience, choosing to give or to give not their permission to download and re-sharing
  • Live web-casts – increasingly popular streaming media, it can be used to cover almost any topic in order to communicate it to many listeners and viewers simultaneously
  • E-learning – this type of media streaming is steadily replacing the conventional method of training, as it is more cost-effective and removes the time and space barrier for learners
  • Online Catalogues – sellers are using streaming media to add more vibrant, colorful and exciting music or video clips to their products, and thus their potential to create an attractive sales brochure is finally fully utilized
